Although I’m definitely not one for traditional New Year’s resolutions, there are certainly some things I want to organise and achieve this coming year. In my newly adult years I’ve come to the realisation that an organised space usually helps to create a happy space. I’ve put together a step-by-step list of how I’ve now managed to organise my toy collection and make room for a few upgraded gadgets.

Step one: Purge

Rummaging through your trusty collection of sex toys and deciding what to keep can sometimes be a challenging task. I’m a sucker for sentimental value. So many memories. So many experiences.

I find the best way to start is specifically looking for toys that either no longer work or are heading that way. It’s also a good opportunity to be on the lookout for any toys that may have the odd nick or tear in them. Regardless of the fact that the toy may still be in perfect working order, a scratch is a highway for bacteria and possibly even infection. It's best to replace the ol’ boy.

It may be tempting to leave something in the draw, but let’s be honest – how often do you actually use it? Whether it has been sitting in there due to it no longer being your favourite or because you’ve owned it since you were 17, it may be best to think about giving it the boot.

Like I previously mentioned, I’m the master of hoarding things with the smallest bit of sentimental value and throwing away some of my sex toys genuinely felt like saying goodbye to an old friend! New Zealand are yet to jump on this band wagon, so instead I’d recommend giving the local council or landfill a call for the best advice.

Having a chat about your used sex toys with the local rubbish collectors may sound awkward, but starting the conversation may actually help to work towards a future of disposing our old toys properly and safely.

Also let’s be honest, I’m almost positive that landfill workers have seen their fair share of incorrectly disposed of sex toys! Let’s not sacrifice the environment for a couple of good orgasms.

Step two: Clean

Finding the time to clean your toys can sometimes feel impossible. Is it really that important?

Cleaning your treasured toys is a lot more important than you may think, and believe me when I say that your toys will thank you in the long run for remembering to bathe them!

Depending on the material, each toy will have their own bathing routine. I generally separate my toys into Porous and Non-Porous.

Porous materials include hard plastic, acrylic, and rubber and tend to be a lot better at holding onto nasty bacteria. Avoid putting these kinds of toys in the dishwasher as you may find them a tad misshapen after a wash cycle.

A good soapy warm water rinse is your best bet for porous material toys - and make sure you wash around all the little nooks and crannies. Using a sex toy cleaner is a really good idea and can be used regardless of the type of toy.

Non-porous materials include toys made from silicone, glass, and steel. These toys are usually all good to go in the top rack of a dishwasher as they can handle a bit more heat. Or if you’d prefer, hand washing them is also fine.

If you have any battery operated toys, don't submerge them in water unless they have a waterproof design. If in doubt, always read the box or check online for your specific toys cleaning needs.

When drying off your toys laying them out on a towel to air dry is all you need to do. Just be sure to pack them away before inviting over your grandma for tea.

Step three: Storage

If you’re not able to invest in a new toy case or box, the top bedside table drawer usually works.

Before warming up your Tetris skills and piling in your newly cleaned toys, make sure that the drawer itself is clean and free of any dust and lint. I’d also recommend not sharing the space with your socks and underwear. Having the full drawer dedicated only to your toys not only helps for easy access but also stops any cross contamination and unwanted fluff.
